A force is anything that can change a body’s state of motion — accelerating it, slowing it down, deflecting it — or deform it. Like position and velocity, force too has a magnitude, a direction and a sense: it is thus a vector quantity, and it combines with other forces by the same rules seen for vectors. This section introduces force as a vector and surveys the types of force encountered in early mechanics.
