Problem

Dimensional analysis of the pendulum. Galileo conjectured that the period TT of a pendulum depended on the mass mm, the length LL and the acceleration of gravity gg. (a) Show, by dimensional analysis, that the only possible combination with dimensions of time is T=kL/gT = k\sqrt{L/g}, where kk is a pure number. (b) Explain why the mass cannot appear. (c) Knowing that the experimental value of kk is 2π2\pi for small oscillations, calculate TT for L=1  mL = 1\;\text{m}.
