Significant figures at the supermarket. On the label of a packet of pasta you read “net weight ”. (a) How many significant figures does the value have? (b) Between which extremes can the real mass range? (c) If you buy 6 packets, what is the absolute uncertainty on the total mass? And the relative one? (d) Why does the relative uncertainty decrease?

Step 1 — Significant figures (a). The value read with an uncertainty of () already has the units digit uncertain: so the significant digits are , , , i.e.

It is the same reason why averaging several measurements reduces the random error by a factor : independent errors partly cancel out.
