Friction is the contact force, parallel to the surface, that opposes sliding. It has two regimes: static (a constraint force that takes on the necessary value, up to a maximum μsR\mu_s R) and kinetic (constant value μdR\mu_d R while the body slides, which dissipates kinetic energy as heat).
