A bend of radius is banked at angle . At what speed can a car take it without relying on friction?
Banked bend: weight and normal ; the horizontal component of provides the centripetal acceleration .
Solution
Method. Only the weight (vertical) and the normal (perpendicular to the road surface) act on the car. Circular motion requires a horizontal centripetal force, directed towards the centre of the bend. Resolving : vertical component , horizontal component :
