Two different gases, hydrogen and oxygen, are kept at the same temperature. Which of the two has the faster molecules on average? Explain why.
Solution
The temperature fixes the mean translational kinetic energy per molecule, which is the same for both gases and does not depend on mass: From it follows that the speed depends on the mass: At equal kinetic energy, lighter molecules must move faster. Hydrogen ( u) is much lighter than oxygen ( u), so it is faster: precisely, of hydrogen is times that of oxygen.
