Field energy in the capacitor. An air parallel-plate capacitor has square plates of side =5,0  cm\ell=5{,}0\;\text{cm} and separation d=1,0  mmd=1{,}0\;\text{mm}. It is charged to V=100  VV=100\;\text{V}.

(a) Calculate the magnitude of the field EE between the plates. (b) Calculate the energy density u=12ε0E2u=\tfrac12\varepsilon_0 E^2. (c) Work out the total energy U=u2dU=u\cdot\ell^2\cdot d and compare it with 12CV2\tfrac12 CV^2: they must match.
