Problem
Reading a graph: charging a capacitor. The voltage across a capacitor being charged through a resistor is measured:
(s) (V) Knowing that , determine (battery voltage) and (time constant ). Hint: .
Solution
Battery voltage . As the exponential vanishes and : the capacitor charges up to the generator’s voltage. From the table, at s the voltage has settled at V (it no longer increases), so
Time constant . The time constant is, by definition, the instant at which the capacitor reaches a fraction of the final value: The table shows exactly V at s. Hence
Check. Let’s verify the point at s : V, in perfect agreement with the table. After time constants the capacitor is at of full charge; after it is essentially fully charged. This is the universal behaviour of charging.
