Problem
A parallel-plate capacitor has plates of area separated by an air gap of thickness . It is charged by connecting it to a battery, then disconnected. Determine the capacitance, the stored charge, and the total electrostatic energy.
Solution
Data in SI units. , , .
Capacitance. For an air-filled parallel-plate capacitor:
Stored charge. From the definition of capacitance :
Electrostatic energy. The energy stored in the capacitor:
Once the battery is disconnected the charge stays constant (the capacitor is isolated); the calculated energy is the one stored in the electric field between the plates.
