Until now the source has been a black box that “lifts” charges to the initial potential. Here we open the box: what happens inside a cell or a battery to keep a constant potential difference at its terminals? From the physical problem (a non-electrostatic force is needed) we arrive at the definition of electromotive force, at internal resistance, and at the energy balance of the battery.
