An infinite ladder circuit (or ladder network) is a periodic chain of identical cells extending to infinity. It cannot be reduced group by group, because the groups never end. The key is the self-similarity trick: adding a cell to the circuit leaves the circuit identical to itself, and this condition translates into a single equation for the equivalent resistance. In the special case of all-equal resistors, the solution brings out the golden ratio.
