Throughout the chapter we have assumed two pure types of material: conductors (metals with free electrons, tiny resistivity) and insulators (enormous resistivity). Materials halfway between the two, semiconductors, are the pillar of all modern electronics. At the opposite extreme, some materials brought to very low temperatures completely lose their resistance: superconductors.
