The fish’s strange sky. A fish looks upward from beneath the smooth surface of a pond. Its effective refractive index is that of water, n1,33n \approx 1{,}33, against air with n1n \approx 1. (a) Calculate the critical angle beyond which rays coming from outside can no longer enter the water. (b) Sketch the ray diagram the fish sees: what is the shape of the “window” through which the objects of the outside world reach it? What does it see instead when looking outside that circular window? (c) Estimate the radius of that window if the fish is at a depth of 1,0  m1{,}0\;\text{m}.
