When the conductor is not a wire but an extended mass, the induced currents close into vortices inside the material: these are the eddy currents, or Foucault currents. Their dissipation through Joule heating is sometimes exploited (brakes, levitation, induction cooking), sometimes fought against (transformer and motor cores).
