Problem
An ideal solenoid carries a sinusoidal current imposed by the generator. On the same plane (abscissa , ordinates normalised to their respective peaks) draw: (a) the field in the solenoid, (b) the self-induced EMF , (c) the self-linked flux . Indicate the phase shifts relative to .
Sinusoidal current imposed by the generator.
Solution
Field and flux. In the solenoid , so is in phase with (same sinusoid). The self-linked flux is , so it too is in phase with :
Self-induced EMF. The EMF is shifted by in lag (form ): it is maximum in magnitude when crosses zero with maximum slope, and zero when is at its peaks.
Summary of phase shifts: .
In phase: and (red). The EMF (blue, ) is shifted by a quarter period.
