Case (inductive): , so . Case (capacitive): , so .
Inductive case: the total voltage (blue) leads the current (red).
Capacitive case: the total voltage (blue) lags the current (red).
In both cases stays in phase with , leads by and lags by ; it is the dominant term ( or ) that fixes the sign of .
