Problem — Wavelength of an FM station

Problem

An FM radio station broadcasts at frequency $f = 2\cdot 10^8\;\text{Hz}$. Calculate the wavelength of the signal (use $c = 3\cdot 10^8\;\text{m/s}$).

Solution

Setup. From the fundamental wave relation $c = \lambda f$ we get $\lambda = c/f$.

Calculation.

$\lambda = \frac{c}{f} = \frac{3\cdot 10^8}{2\cdot 10^8} = 1{,}5\;\text{m}$

$\ev{\lambda = 1{,}5\;\text{m}}$

FM radio waves have wavelengths of a few metres, much longer than those of visible light.
