Solution
Without the central polariser. and are crossed at . Malus’s law gives
so total darkness.
With at . Malus’s law is applied to each successive pair. After the light is vertically polarised with intensity ; after :
and the polarisation is now rotated to . After (which is at from ):
The intermediate polaroid “re-projects” the polarisation at , giving a non-zero component: adding a filter can let more light through, a counterintuitive result.
