In Euclidean geometry the straight line is the shortest path between two points; for relativistic proper time the opposite holds — the uniform straight-line trajectory is the one that maximises the time lived by the traveller. This “inverse triangle inequality” is the deep root of the twin paradox and the principle governing timers, muons and every moving clock. This section states it and shows its physical consequences.
