Let us return to the box of four themes. They are not separate truths, but faces of a single logical structure: entering through one door inevitably leads to the other three.

Quantisation (theme 1) arises from wave-particle duality (theme 2): standing waves necessarily have discrete values of frequency — like the strings of a guitar, which sound only certain notes. If matter is a wave, its bound states are quantised.

The uncertainty principle (theme 3) is a consequence of duality (theme 2): a particle that is also a wave cannot have simultaneously a defined (that is, a defined ) and a defined position.

Measurement theory (theme 4) incorporates all the others: quantisation (measurements give discrete values), duality (the measurement brings the wave back to a specific particle) and uncertainty (one cannot measure everything simultaneously).
Every pair of themes is interwoven with the others. There is no privileged starting point: quantum mechanics is a network, not a pyramid.
A century of quantum mechanics
From 1900 (Planck) to 1930 (the Copenhagen interpretation of Bohr, Heisenberg and Born), a generation of physicists built what remains the most accurate scientific theory ever conceived: in over a century of tests, no experiment has ever contradicted it. Yet it also remains the strangest. As Richard Feynman said, “Nobody understands quantum mechanics”. Yet, without it, there would be no lasers, transistors, LEDs, magnetic resonance imaging, photovoltaics, computers, and a good part of modern chemistry: the world we live in.
With this chapter the journey through twentieth-century physics comes to a close. We could only offer an overview: real quantum mechanics — with the Schrödinger equation, the complete hydrogen atom, spin, entanglement — requires advanced mathematics and is the subject of university courses. But the fundamental ideas are here, organised into four themes that call to one another, and they encompass one of the most profound re-understandings of reality that humanity has ever produced. Nature, at its most intimate level, is not a clockwork mechanism: it is a dance of probabilities and observations, in which “the cat, after I’ve photographed it, is no longer the same”.
