Step 1 — Level values. With En=−13,6/n2eV:
E1=−13,6,E2=−3,40,E3=−1,51,E4=−0,85eV
The levels crowd together as they approach E=0 (the ionisation limit): the spacing drops rapidly as n grows, as shown in the diagram.
Step 2 — Lyman series (n→1). Jumps towards the ground state, the most energetic, in the ultraviolet. The smallest (2→1):
ΔE=E2−E1=−3,40+13,6=10,2eV⇒λ=10,21240≈122nm
Step 3 — Balmer series (n→2). Jumps towards n=2, in the visible. The Hα line (3→2):
ΔE=E3−E2=−1,51+3,40=1,89eV⇒λ=1,891240≈656nm(red)
The Hβ line (4→2): ΔE=−0,85+3,40=2,55eV⇒λ≈486nm (blue-green).
Lyman→UV;Balmer→visible;Hα≈656nm
