Problem
Ranking. Four photons have wavelength :
- (A) (orange light)
- (B) (infrared)
- (C) (X-ray)
- (D) (violet)
Order the energies of the photons from smallest to largest.
Solution
Principle. : the energy is inversely proportional to . The shorter the wavelength, the more energetic the photon. So we just need to order by decreasing .
Infrared (B) is the least energetic; the X-ray (C), with ten thousand times shorter than visible light, is enormously more energetic — this is why it ionises and passes through tissue.
