Comment. An electron confined in a region of atomic size ( nm) has a ground-level energy of a few eV, the same order as atomic binding energies (the ground state of hydrogen is eV). This is not a coincidence: confining the electron imposes, via the uncertainty principle, a minimum momentum and hence a kinetic energy on the electronvolt scale. The infinite well is the simplest model capturing quantisation: only standing waves with an integer number of half-wavelengths across the width are allowed.
