The two mechanisms that make it possible to produce energy from nuclei are opposite but equivalent from the point of view of the binding curve: splitting a heavy nucleus (fission) or joining two light nuclei (fusion). In both cases the resulting nuclei have a higher B/AB/A than the reactants, and the difference comes out as energy.
