Problem

A radioactive source simultaneously emits α\alpha, β\beta and γ\gamma radiation. Explain why a simple sheet of paper is enough to stop the α\alphas, whereas the γ\gammas pass through several centimetres of lead. What is needed instead to stop the β\betas? Justify your answer based on the physical nature of the three types of radiation.

Penetrating power of the three types of radiation: the α\alphas are stopped by paper, the β\betas by a few mm of aluminium, the γ\gammas only by thicknesses of lead.
