A nuclide AA (mean lifetime τA=1 hour\tau_A = 1\ \text{hour}) decays into nuclide BB (mean lifetime τB=24 hours\tau_B = 24\ \text{hours}), which in turn decays into the stable nuclide CC. At the initial instant NA(0)=1012N_A(0) = 10^{12}, NB(0)=0N_B(0) = 0, NC(0)=0N_C(0) = 0.

  • (a) At what instant is the number of BB nuclei maximum?
  • (b) What is the value of NBN_B at that maximum?
