Physicist — Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (Woburn, Massachusetts 1753 – Auteuil, Paris 1814), was an Anglo-American physicist and statesman. Born in the British colonies of America, he remained loyal to the Crown during the Revolution and moved to Europe, entering the service of the Elector of Bavaria, who made him a count of the Holy Roman Empire. He is celebrated for his experiments on the nature of heat: observing the enormous heat produced while boring cannon barrels, he argued that heat was not a material fluid (the ‘caloric’), but a form of motion. This insight contributed decisively to the abandonment of caloric theory and to the birth of thermodynamics. He was also a pioneer of applied physics, improving chimneys, stoves and heating systems.

Noticing that friction in the boring of cannons produced heat with seemingly no end, he concluded that heat had to be motion rather than a substance, dealing a decisive blow to caloric theory.
