Physicist and instrument maker — Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (Danzig, 1686 – The Hague, 1736) was a physicist and skilled maker of scientific instruments, of German origin but active chiefly in the Netherlands. Orphaned as a young man, he devoted himself to glassblowing and to the manufacture of precision instruments. In 1714 he built the first reliable mercury thermometer, exploiting the uniform expansion of the metal to obtain reproducible measurements, a marked advance on earlier alcohol thermometers. He introduced the temperature scale that bears his name, still in use today in English-speaking countries, originally defined using reference points such as a freezing mixture and the temperature of the human body. His instruments, highly accurate for the time, made possible quantitative thermal measurements comparable between different laboratories.

On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F: the difference of exactly 180 degrees between the two points was a practical choice tied to the reference points he had initially adopted.
