Solid-state physicist — Johannes Georg Bednorz (Neuenkirchen 1950) is a German physicist, a specialist in solid-state physics. Trained at Münster and the ETH Zurich, he joined IBM’s research laboratory in Rüschlikon, Switzerland. Together with Karl Alexander Müller, he discovered in 1986 high-temperature superconductivity in a copper, barium and lanthanum oxide, which lost all electrical resistance at temperatures much higher than had previously been thought possible. The discovery opened up the field of ceramic superconductors (cuprates) and triggered a worldwide race to find materials with ever-higher critical temperatures. For this result, Bednorz and Müller received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1987.
