Theoretical physicist and chemist — Josiah Willard Gibbs (New Haven, 1839 – New Haven, 1903) was an American theoretical physicist and chemist, considered the founder of chemical thermodynamics and of modern statistical mechanics. He spent nearly his whole life at Yale, where he was the first Doctor of Engineering in the United States and later professor of mathematical physics, often unpaid in his early years. In his work on the equilibrium of heterogeneous substances he introduced fundamental concepts such as chemical potential and free energy, and formulated the phase rule, an essential tool for the study of chemical equilibria and phase diagrams. In 1902 he published a work that gave a rigorous foundation to statistical mechanics, connecting the microscopic behaviour of particles to macroscopic thermodynamic quantities. His work, very abstract for the time, was appreciated in Europe by scientists such as Maxwell even before it was in the United States.
